God’s Wrath

Part 3
Teach us basically you can take all this panting smoldering wrath and and see it in the Bible in three dimensions.
The First Dimension is this.
We can see God’s Eternal or ultimate wrath that’s Eternal
conscious punishment of sinners in hell. In Revelation 14 you see it first mentioned
the the wrath of God that causes the the Sinners to go to the lake of fire.
Then chapter 20 is the Lake of Fire in verse 15 but not only is there God’s Eternal or ultimate wrath the Bible is filled with another type of Wrath.
That is this period of time. It’s called the day of the Lord. It’s the day of of God’s coming future wrath when the dam bursts. Now hell is not the dam bursting it is the the localizing of
all the people who have ever refused to repent into one place.
Where God directs his wrath forever and just puts that attribute of his.
He just puts it right there forever burning against their sin but the day of the Lord is different the day of the Lord is not hell.
It’s what we call the tribulation. It’s God smiting the Earth in the tribulation and that’s what so much of the Old Testament is about.
In fact if you read the book of Zephaniah little three chapter book. In the first chapter.
Zephaniah
Chapter 1
1The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah,
the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.
2I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the
stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.
4I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut
off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;
5And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD,
 and that swear by Malcham;
6And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.
7Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared
a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.
8And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’S sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s
children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.
9In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters’ houses with
violence and deceit.
10And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate,
and an howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills.
11Howl, ye inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that bear silver are cut off.
12And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are
settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.
13Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not
inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.
14The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the
mighty man shall cry there bitterly.
15That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness
and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
16A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.
17And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the
LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.
18Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’S wrath; but the whole
land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell
 in the land.
It talks about the Babylonians. How they destroy Jerusalem. Then Zephaniah says but that’s
nothing compared to the great, gloomy and horrific day of the Lord.
See all the prophets were looking at this future time.
Then Lord willing I hope we’ll be able to look at the constant warning of God’s present wrath.
You see there are for every sin that’s ever committed by anyone, anywhere saved or unsaved.
There are consequences most of us are so unaware of that. I mean we just say yeah a little lie,
here a little lie there. Every time we sin there is a consequence. There is a contributive consequence which is a theological term for God has to make a retribution.
He judge that sin but there’s also in us a consequence every time you lie. You’re a little less truthful. Every time you steal you’re a little less trustworthy.
Every time that we get enraged we’re a little less under control. Every time is a consequence I mean every time someone abuses alcohol and becomes drunken. It’s a destructive poison in their body. The same with other chemicals. It the same with everything.
Even immorality the Bible says every time we commit immorality there is a consequence in our body.
So there is God’s present wrath which shows up in the consequences of sin.
Let’s just walk through and look at the the usage of the words for rest starting in Revelation 6:16.
“And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:”
What we see is in in the chronicling of God’s Wrath. We see him going between the thumos- panting wrath to the orge- smoldering deep held in Wrath and in verse 16 that’s the orge it says he who sits on the throne from the
Wrath that’s the settled long building Wrath of the Lamb then verse 17
it’s the same word the great day of his or his wrath has come now.
Turn over to chapter 11 with me because I want you to
see as this unfolds. The nations were angry and your wrath- orge- has come this built up of wrath but look at what he says next in verse 18 of chapter 11.
18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead,
that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
and the time of the Dead that is they should
be judged. So this is the retributive Wrath God has built up this long smoldering wrath. He’s going to bring retribution but look what else it says there’s a positive note in Revelation 11:18
and you should reward your servants. This is theology likes to put big words with everything but this is called the remunerative. You’ve heard of remuneration getting paid remuna means that is God rewards.
Look what it says in verse 18 you reward your servants the prophets. Now in God’s justice his retributive and remunerative Justice.
There is an exact accounting God knows who biggest sinner. He remunerates and has retribution that is coincidental and and coincides with the amount so that means
Jesus said that. That person who has sinned little will have few Stripes. They will be punished less than one who has many sins. They have many stripes so it does make a difference how bad you
are in sin on Earth. How much you serve the Lord for Eternal rewards.
The the first is in Revelation chapter 14:9-11.
9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor  night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
This is the first time both words are in one verse, verse 11 and it says he himself shall also drink uh the wine of the Wrath. Now this is not the smoldering settled longing. This is the thumos the panting wrath of God it’s poured out like a cup of wine which is poured out full strength into the cup of his.
Here is the word wrath orge translated indignation it’s because two words that meant so similar they translated them rendered them a little differently but it’s both words that is the first one the wrath of God which speaks of the the the explosive panting wrath.
The indignation is the orge the settled wrath.
Now look at verse 19 it’s thumos again into the great wine press of the wrath of God.
19And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
20And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress,
even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
Keep going to chapter 15:1
1 And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
Thumos again the seven last plagues for in them the Wrath thumas the panting of God is complete chapter 15:7
7And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.
Against that again translated wrath Vials full of the Wrath or that of God
chapter 16 another occurrence of that.
That panting you know visible wrath
it says in 16:1
1And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
The vials of the wrath of God.
Then in verse 19.
19And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell:
and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
They’re both there now. The great city was divided into three parts.
The cities of the Nations fell and the great Babylon was remembered before God to give her the cup of the
wine of the fierceness. There’s the pant-thumos. The thumos of his wrath and that’s the word orge. It’s the settled long smoldering wrath.
Then the last occurrence is in chapter 19. It’s at the second coming. Now this is what’s so interesting to me in the doctrine of God. I hear people all the time say. Oh the god of the Old Testament.
He’s killing all those Canaanites. All that bad stuff and he’s judging people but Jesus would never do that. That’s kind of the the liberal Social Gospel, Albert Schweitzer kind of Jesus is so sweet. He wouldn’t condemn anyone but look here’s Jesus chapter 19.
He’s actually riding a white horse at the front of all the hosts of Heaven.
The Saints are there and all of the angels of heaven.
The redeemed and righteous. I mean the glorified angels that will never sin are behind him.
Look at Revelation Chapter 19:11
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Out of his mouth. Christ’s mouth goes a sharp sword that with it he should strike the Nations. This the first time the Earth sees Jesus after the resurrection. We’ve seen him with the disciples. We saw him in the church walking around in Revelation 2 and 3 and four and 5.
He’s being worshiped. First time the Earth sees him. Humans since his resurrection.
He’s got this sword and he’s striking them. Then look what it says next.
He will rule them with a rod of Iron by the way this is a little preview of the millennium.
This is the Fulfillment of all those verses in the Old Testament that Jesus is going to literally sit on the throne of his father David.
He will rule over the Nations. Psalm 2 says with a rod of iron. A lot of the Old Testament is about that. This shows us he’s coming down with this sword putting down the Rebellion.
So that he can sit on Earth and Rule. Look what it says next. This is gentle calm Jesus.
He himself that’s Christ Treads The Wine Press of the thumos that’s the panting wrath and the orge that’s the smoldering Wrath of almighty God.
