WELCOME TO THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS:If you were arriving in Ephesus this morning, there is only one sight that wouldcatch your eyes. Not the bustling harbor teeing with boats, not the roads lined withthe exotic spices and goods from the east. No it would be the lustrous goldengleam of the Temple of Diana. The largest building ever built in the ancient world, the size of a city block, 10 stories high and covered with gold…#1CHRIST WAS SHINING IN HIS CHURCH AT EPHESUS:JESUS ADDRESSES EACH ASSEMBLY 2:1a “To the angel of the church ofEphesus write,I. Powerful Founding: They were heirs to the greatest days of Paul’s earthlyministry, and the longest. Acts 19:11 describes extraordinary miraculousevents. Verse 19 reports amazing conversions and life transformations.II. Godly Nurturing: Paul sent Timothy who stayed until church historyrecords a mob killed him for his strong preaching against sin. John theApostle lived there until his exile in Patmos. And then returned fromPatmos to continue in ministry there.III. Tremendous History: Mary the mother of our Lord lived and died thereand John the apostle gives this city an honor no other knew–Ephesianswas the only church that had 2 apostles write them inspired letters. Ageneration from its founding, Ephesians was mature. Two generationsfrom Pentecost, the church at Ephesus had some of the richest history.#2The Unveiled Christ: Revelation 2 “The Message of Jesus”EPHESUS WAS AN ASSEMBLY THAT PLEASED GODJesus addresses each with Authority 2:1b “These things says He who holds theseven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven goldenlampstands:The City was FAMOUS for its BEAUTY:The Seventh Wonder of the World was at Ephesus: The Temple. The Temple ofArtemis itself had been rebuilt after a great fire in 356 BC, and ranked as one of theseven wonders of the world until its destruction by the Goths in AD 263. After yearsof patient search J. T. Wood in 1870 uncovered its remains in the marsh at the footof Mt. Ayasoluk. It had been the largest building in the Greek world. The Temple ofDiana was four times the size of the Parthenon in Athens. It was 425 feet long, 225feet wide, with a forest of about 130, 30,000 pound, 60 foot high columns, allbeing gifts from kings of the ancient world. Each column around the altar toArtemis (Diana/Romans), had life-size figures all covered with pure gold. The City was FAMOUS for its RELIGION:It contained an image of the goddess which was claimed, had fallen from heaven(cf. Acts 19:35). Indeed, it may well have been a meteorite originally. Silver coinsfrom many places show the validity of the claim that the goddess of Ephesus wasrevered all over the world (Acts 19:27). They bear the inscription Diana Ephesia(cf. Acts 19:34).The City was FAMOUS for its POSITION:Ephesus was second among the cities of the Empire. Only Rome exceeded her inwealth and power. The church in Ephesus is addressed first of the seven (Rev.2:1-7), as being the most important church in the de facto capital, and as being thelanding-place for a messenger from Patmos and standing at the head of a circularroad joining the seven cities in order.#3JESUS APPROVED THEIR PURITY IN THE MIDSTOF A WICKED CULTURE: WELCOME TO SIN CITYJESUS ADDRESSES EACH WITH AN APPROVAL 2:2-3, 6 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And youhave tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found themliars; 3 “and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for Myname’s sake and have not become weary. 6 “But this you have, that you hate thedeeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. The magnificent palace to gross immorality – the Temple of Diana.THERE WAS IN EPHESUS:STRONG IMMORALITYThe Unveiled Christ: Revelation 2 “The Message of Jesus”All day long in the confines of this glittering structure, thousands of prostitutes,(male and female), gave themselves in the sordid worship of the pagan fertilitydeities. At dusk, they would go into the city to earn a living in the bustlingatmosphere of travelers from both land and sea. Do you see why Paul had said tothem 40 years earlier — THEY HAD REPENTED OF THEIR PAST Ephesians 2:3 Amongwhom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of ourflesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by naturethe children of wrath, even as others. They saw their calling 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created inChrist Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that weshould walk in them. THEY LEARNED THE SPIRITUAL SECRET OF PUTTING OFF ANDPUTTING ON 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation theold man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts CHRIST DEEPLY PENETRATED THEIR LIVES 5:3-5 Butfornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be oncenamed among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolishtalking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetousman, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ andof God. THEY RENOUNCED ALL TOUCH WITH THEIR OLD WAYS 5:12 Forit is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them insecret. (KJV)They had resisted STRONG EVIL INFLUENCE:Because this Temple was the most revered site in the ancient world to literallymillions of worshipers, a custom had arisen that anyone was free within a 200-yardsecurity zone. Thus, criminals came from far and wide to find a haven. And, theirpresence only permeated the city with evil. THEY WERE COMMITTED TO TRUTH Ephesians 4:25-32 Whereforeputting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we aremembers one of another. THEY RELEASED ANGER AND PRIDE TO God 26 Be ye angry, andsin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place tothe devil. 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with [his] hands the thing which is good, that he may have to giveto him that needeth. 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of yourmouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may ministergrace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, wherebyye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with allmalice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving oneanother, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. (KJV)THERE WAS IN EPHESUS: STRONG MATERIALISMBecause of the nearly universal worship of Diana, no one would dare to rob her, thus behind the altar was a world bank, for the safe keeping of currency andtreasures. THEY GOT IT Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained aninheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him whoworketh all things after the counsel of his own will: IT WAS SECURE 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance untilthe redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of hisglory. IT IS A LOT! 1:18 The eyes of your understanding beingenlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and whatthe riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, ITS MORE THAN CAN BE COUNTED 2:7 That in the ages tocome he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindnesstoward us through Christ Jesus. IT’S MORE THAN YOU CAN DREAM OF! 3:8 Unto me, who amless than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preachamong the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; (KJV)THERE WAS IN EPHESUS: STRONG SATANISMAs Acts 19 records, there were many who used and followed Occultic books andtheir witchcraft powers of Satan. JESUS IS ABOVE ALL OTHERS Ephesians 1:20-22 Which hewrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set [him] athis own right hand in the heavenly [places], 21 Far above allprincipality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name thatis named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the headover all [things] to the church, HE WAS OUR OLD MASTER 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walkedaccording to the course of this world, according to the prince of thepower of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children ofdisobedience DON”T LET HIM IN! 4:27 Neither give place to the devil. DON”T RELAX AROUND HIS CRONIES [TV, Arts] 5:11 And haveno fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove[them]. 6:10-16 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and inthe power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye maybe able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle notagainst flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritualwickedness in high [places]. 13 Wherefore take unto you the wholearmor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, andhaving done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girtabout with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able toquench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (KJV)THERE WAS IN EPHESUS: STRONG FALSE WORSHIPThe whole worship of Diana, the silver ‘letters’ as the images made and soldthere were called, led to very alluring, sordid and ecstatic worship. THE CHURCH IS A BUILDING THAT WILL NEVER BE DESTROYEDEphesians 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth untoan holy temple in the Lord TRUE WORSHIP IS SPIRITUAL 5:18-21 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselvesin psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody inyour heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God andthe Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselvesone to another in the fear of God. (KJV)MARKS OF GOD’S SAINTSThe Saints were Holy:1. THEY WERE DISCIPLED BY PAUL: They were heirs to the greatest daysof Paul’s earthly ministry and the longest of three years [Acts 20:31]. Acts19:11 describes extraordinary miraculous events. Verse 19 reportsamazing conversions and life transformations.2. THEY WERE SERVANTS OF CHRIST: Revelation 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them whichare evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and arenot, and hast found them liars: (KJV)3. THEY WERE SECURE IN THE LORD: Revelation 12:11 And theyovercame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of theirtestimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. (KJV).HOW? BECAUSE THEY KNEW THEY WERE:• REALLY SAVED• REALLY HIS• REALLY HEAVEN BOUND!#4JESUS GIVES THEM AN ADMONITION:YOU HAVE LEFT/QUIT/FORSAKEN YOUR FIRST LOVE!JESUS ADDRESSES EACH WITH AN ADMONITION2:4 “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”What is First Love?1. Like Jacob: First love made him think 7 years seems as nothing for hisbride.2. Like David: First love that breaks out of the shepherd on a lonelyhillside swelling into Psalms3. Like Mary Magdalene: First love that breaks alabaster boxes ofointment4. Like the woman at Christ’s Feet: First love that loves much for much isforgiven5. Like Mary of Bethany: That sits at the feet of Christ6. Like Paul: That loves his appearing7. Like the Berean Christians: First love is that insatiable desire to readGod’s Word.Have you left it? First love is that passion to be with God’s people every timethey meet, Sunday AM, PM, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday. Have you lost it?-Not laboring – loving.-Not spiritual life that is only orthodox, routine, smoothly running, only with theinner springs of life run dry…–No, it’s love that conquers, captures, and crowns every part of your life.–Love that can’t be defined in 1 Corinthians, only described because it is soimpossible to define.–John spoke much of love and Christ – Synoptic – 29x; John – 45x; He’s herenow waiting. Epistles – 51xBEWARE OF THE JEALOUSY OF JESUSIn certain passages God says, “I am a jealous God (Exodus 20:5; 34:14;Deuteronomy 4:24; 5:9; Joshua 24:19; Nahum 1:2).Just as jealousy in husband or wife is the forceful assertion of an exclusive right,so God asserts His claim, and vindicates it, on those who are His solepossession. As to His spiritual relation to Israel, see, for example, Isaiah 54:5;62:5; Hosea 2:19. He thus claims that He is to Israel as husband is to wife, andaccordingly idolatry and wickedness in every form are spiritual adultery. Hispeople in their evil ways are represented as provoking Him to jealousy(Deuteronomy 32:16,21;1 Kings 14:22; Psalms 78:58; Zephaniah 1:18; 3:8; seealso Numbers 25:11 and compare 1 Corinthians 10:22); the expression isespecially frequent in Ezekiel (see 16:38, 42; 23:25; 36:5, 6; 38:19; 39:25), but isused also in Hosea 2:2,16; Joel 2:18; Zephaniah 1:18; Zechariah 1:14; 8:2.3Jesus is so jealous He doesn’t even want you to have friendship with the world. What is this? Worldliness is forgetting God, friendship/idol is on your mind all thetime, willing to sacrifice for, it blocks out other things; Jam 4:6At the end of an incredible life, John the Apostle wrote some arresting words. Hehad met and followed Jesus as a very young man. After those climactic days ofthe Crucifixion, resurrection and birth of the church — John had outlived them all.As the final Apostle he closes his message with this warning:In First John, the last words of John to believers are a warning against idols. 1John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. KJV)What are some modern day idols? Look at some old ones the Lord condemns, and we can see the new. THE IDOL OF CAREER, JOB, OCCUPATION OR TECHNOLOGY:Habakkuk 1:15-16 They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net,and gather them in their drags: therefore they rejoice and are glad.1:16 Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; becauseby them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous. (KJV) THE IDOL OF APPETITE, DESIRE: Philippians 3:19 Whose end isdestruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. KJV) THE IDOL OF MONEY: Job 31:24-28 24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold,Thou art my confidence;25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God thatis above. (KJV)#5JESUS APPEALS TO THEMJESUS ADDRESSES EACH WITH AN APPEAL2:5 “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the firstworks, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from itsplace—unless you repent..3 words-Remember – GO back to where you departed. Repent – change yourwill, Repeat- things you had at the start.1. Assembly – Ephesians then and now.2. Author – Christ the source and searching one.3. Approval – great things.4. Admonition – you left the most vital of all loves.5. Appeal – remember (repent/return if you have an ear.)What does God truly want from us? Listen to Jesus: Matthew 22:37-3837 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.38 This is the first and great commandment. (KJV)How can we do that? David framed his love in a Psalm, the 63rd:Here are some questions we need to answer:Who or what is my God?What is the center of my life? What do I rely on?Imagine standing before God and answering:Do you truly love me more than these?Do you truly love me?Do you love me?“Fairest Lord Jesus”“When I Survey”APPENDICESWORLDLINESS is not so much a matter of activity as of attitude. It is possible fora Christian to stay away from questionable amusements and doubtful places andstill love the world, for worldliness is a matter of the heart. To the extent that aChristian loves the world system and the things in it, he does not love the Father.WORLDLINESS not only affects your response to the love of God; it also affectsyour response to the will of God. “The world passeth away… but he that doeththe will of God abideth forever” (1 John 2:17).Doing the will of God is a joy for those living in the love of God. “If ye love Me,keep My commandments.” But when a believer loses his enjoyment of theFather’s love, he finds it hard to obey the Father’s will. When you put these two factors together, you have a PRACTICAL DEFINITIONOF WORLDLINESS: anything in a Christian’s life that causes him to lose hisenjoyment of the Father’s love or his desire to do the Father’s will is worldly andmust be avoided. Responding to the Father’s love (your personal devotional life),and doing the Father’s will (your daily conduct)—these are two tests ofworldliness.#6JESUS ASSURES THEMJESUS ADDRESSES EACH WITH AN ASSURANCE2:7 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Tohim who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst ofthe Paradise of God.” ’–Those with spiritual ears will listen.–Those who listen “my sheep hear my voice” and are saved.–Those who are saved overcome.–And saved ones (overcomers) get to go to God’s Paradise, Heaven and liveendlessly.TRUE BELIEVERS HAVEAN ABUNDANT LIFERevelation 2:7He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To himthat overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of theparadise of God. (KJV) AN OVERFLOWING LIFE: John 7:38 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (KJV) AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE: John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for tosteal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and thatthey might have [it] more abundantly. [perissos exceeding some number ormeasure or rank or need, over and above, more than is necessary, superadded, exceeding abundantly, supremely something further, more, much more than all, more plainly, superior, extraordinary, surpassing, uncommon, pre-eminence, superiority, advantage, more eminent, moreremarkable, more excellent]Remember, Repent, Repeat and have that first love!!!Who is an overcomer? You are, if you are: A person who has trusted Christ to overcome the penalty of sin at thecross. If you, each day are seeing God help you overcome the power of sin. If you go to Heaven shall forever be rid of the presence of sin. Therefore, overcoming sin=1, 2,3, – the person, power, penalty of sin isdealt with! Is that you?
“Only one life to live and soon is pastOnly what’s done for Christ will last!”Hoping to make the time I have left count for the glory of God.
